Nnamdi Azikiwe University is a degree awarding federal university founded in 1991 and located in Awka, capital of Anambra State South East Nigeria. It has two campuses – in Awka and Nnewi all in Anambra State.
It was an offshoot of defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). The Awka and Nnewi campuses of the University were converted to what is now known Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 1991 and later taken over by Federal Government in 1992.
The school is named after Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria (1963 – 1966). Though it started initially with 2 campuses, it now has another campus at Agulu (location of Faculty of Pharmacy) making them 3 in all.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University is fondly called UNIZIK or NAU (Pronounced Na You). The motto of the school is Discipline, Self Reliance and Excellence.
The University presently has 15 faculties and they include: Management, Management Sciences, Education, Agriculture, Medicine, Arts, Environmental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law, Physical Sciences, Engineering, Basic Medical Sciences, Bio-Sciences, Health Science and Technology, and Social Science.
Furthermore, the University is fully accredited by National University Commission. Just like other Nigerian government universities, the School is headed by a Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor oversees the daily activities of the University.
It is one of the highly recognized in Eastern Nigeria, Nigeria and Africa. The current Vice Chancellor of the University is Professor Joseph Ahaneku. Their students are fondly called Zikites, and they are over 30,000.

Just like many Nigerian universities, Unizik provides hostel accommodation for their students. The school also has a neighbouring off-campus accommodation as well for students who may not be fortunate enough to secure hostel accommodation.

Even though Nnamdi Azikiwe University is not among the pioneer Universities in Nigeria, due to efforts of its management the school has fared largely well in most rankings carried out by recognized bodies and consortiums.
Unizik is a third generation university but competes favourably with the first generation Nigerian universities. For example, the result released by Journals Consortium in 2015 shows that the University comes top of many second generation universities like University of Calabar.
The result tabulated on their website on http://ranking.journalsconsortium.org used the amount of research works and citations (2010 to 2014) released by schools and Nnamdi Azikiwe University came in at 8th and in Nigeria and 42nd in Africa.
UNIZIK Postgraduate Courses
The requirements for doing Master’s Degree and Directorate of Philosophy vary from department to department at Unizik.
To be qualified to do a Postgraduate Diploma, candidates must possess a BSC of CPGA of 2.50 and above on a scale of 5 and you must have completed your Compulsory NYSC or provide an exemption letter from the Corps (excluding graduates of Architecture).
Furthermore, candidates from Polytechnics must have HND with Upper Credit Division before they are considered for admission into Postgraduate Diploma.
Also, the candidates must possess 5 Credit passes in O’ Level including English and any other relevant subject to the course of choice.
The University offers Master’s degree programme in all its faculties. Interested candidates for Master’s degree must hold a BSC of CGPA of 3.00 and above on a scale of 5.00.
For candidates from Postgraduate Diploma, they must have a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a scale of 5 to be qualified for MSC programme.
Finally for Doctor of Philosophy, candidates must have a CGPA of 3.50 and above on a scale of 5 from a recognized university or 60% in course work. All candidates must have a minimum of 5 Credit passes (including English Language) in O’ Level in not more than 2 sittings. UNIZIK Grading System
Just like many Nigerian universities, Nnamdi Azikiwe University uses the NUC standard for grading its students.
This means that for NUC programmes, grading is done on a scale of 5.00. The rundown is shown below:
First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)
Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)
Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)
Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50).
Class division is used to test students’ Intelligent Quotient. Notice that NUC has since abolished the Pass Grade in Nigerian universities.
This means that any student who scores <45 in an exam is assumed to have failed it.
UNIZIK Admission Requirement
All prospective UTME candidates of Nnamdi Azikiwe University must compulsorily sit for their Computer Based Post UTME screening test before they are considered for admission.
The range of candidates UTME score varies from 180 to 200 or more depending on department of choice. Please note that these scores are subject to change from time to time.
And to be considered for admission, all candidates must have 5 Credit passes in O’ level (inclusive of English Language and subjects relevant to their course of choice) in not more than 2 sittings, and must score 40% and above in the Post UTME before they are considered for admission.
Also, candidates must choose Nnamdi Azikiwe University as their first choice university.
Furthermore, Direct Entry candidates must possess the same subject requirement above with OND, NCE, HND, etc. The acceptable cut-off score is announced by the school as they are not fixed and selection is made based on candidate’s certificate and Direct Entry screening result.
UTME Candidates who chose this school as their second choice can also do a change of institution to be eligible to sit for the exam.
UNIZIK Duration Of Studies
Nnamdi Azikiwe University uses the standard of 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, which means students spend a minimum of 4 years in the course of doing a program in the University.
Also, all other courses offered at the University follow this schedule of 4 years (thus, following that standard), but there are variations in courses like Law and Engineering (which require 5 years or more), and Medicine faculty (6/7 years depending on nature of academic calendar of Unizik).
